This course offers an introduction to the Open Access movement and institutional repositories as fundamental tools for the dissemination, preservation, and visibility of scientific knowledge. Participants will learn about the characteristics and functionalities of the Rey Juan Carlos University's institutional repositories, BURJC Digital and eDatos URJC, and will learn how to use them to locate, consult, deposit, and share academic publications and research data. Information search strategies and best practices related to the management and dissemination of open access scientific output will also be covered.

What you will learn

The course is designed to teach you how to independently use the institutional repositories and open access resources of the Rey Juan Carlos University, allowing you to develop skills to locate, manage, disseminate and preserve academic and scientific output effectively.

The course will cover:

  • The Open Access Movement. Understanding what Open Access is, its principles, advantages, and its importance in disseminating scientific knowledge. The main national and international initiatives and policies related to open science will be analyzed, as well as the benefits it offers to researchers, students, and academic institutions.
  • Institutional Repositories. Introduction to the concept of an institutional repository, its objectives, and functions within universities and research centers. Participants will learn how these systems contribute to the preservation, visibility, and dissemination of scientific, teaching, and institutional output.
  • URJC eData: Research Data Repository. This course covers the features and functionalities of URJC eData, the institutional repository for storing, preserving, and disseminating research data. Topics include data management, publishing datasets, the FAIR principles, and best practices for sharing scientific information responsibly.
  • BURJC Digital: the URJC's institutional repository. You will learn what BURJC Digital is, its main collections, and how to use it to consult, deposit, and disseminate academic and scientific documents. Self-archiving procedures, access policies, and the benefits of increasing the visibility and impact of academic output through open access publication will be explained.
  • Searching and retrieving information in repositories. Practical use of institutional repositories to locate academic works, scientific publications, research data, and other open access resources. Information search and retrieval strategies will be developed to facilitate access to reliable, high-quality content.
  • Effective use and best practices. Application of best practices in the deposit, management, and dissemination of academic and scientific output. Topics will include copyright, open licenses, digital preservation, and the responsible use of institutional repositories, contributing to the development of an open science culture and access to knowledge.

Requirements

  • No prior knowledge is necessary, as this is an introductory course for students interested in learning about the URJC Library.
  • Given the general nature of the course, no prior qualification is required.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students of the URJC who wish to learn about and take advantage of all the resources, tools and services offered by the university library to facilitate their academic development.

You will learn what Open Access is and what the function of institutional repositories is, as well as how to use the URJC repositories (BURJC Digital and eDatos URJC) to search, consult, deposit and disseminate your academic publications and research data.

It will allow you to locate quality scientific information, increase the visibility of your academic or research work, share data and publications in open access, and learn about best practices for the management, preservation and dissemination of scientific output.

You can download your certificate of completion free of charge once you have completed all the required course activities. The certificate will confirm your successful completion of the course and will include the total number of hours.

This course is designed to be self-paced. There's no need to start at a specific time, although a learning pace of one topic per week is recommended.

At the end of each module you will be assessed with a test on the basic concepts learned.

This course is part of the training itinerary for students who enroll in the training activity "Search and management of scientific information" with which 1 ECTS credit will be obtained for the subject of Academic Recognition of Credits.
