This training is designed to help students discover and master the essential tools for finding, evaluating, and managing scientific information in a practical and independent manner. During this four-hour learning experience, participants will become familiar with effective bibliographic search strategies, learn to construct precise queries using basic and advanced operators, and master the complete use of the BRAIN search engine, the University Library's main resource for locating books, articles, theses, and digital materials. The course's main objective is to develop key competencies for the ethical and strategic management of information, enabling students to organize and save results and make the most of available digital services. All of this will contribute to enhancing their academic autonomy, facilitating the more effective and confident completion of university papers, research, and projects.

What you will learn

This course is designed to train you in the use of and access to scientific information, enabling you to develop the skills to recognize, locate, and ethically and effectively evaluate the information you need through the knowledge and use of the information resources provided by the University Library. The course will cover the following topics:

  • Strategic bibliographic search: searching for and identifying key concepts, selecting sources, and developing an effective search strategy.
  • Search operators: using boolean, truncation, and exactness operators to optimize searches.
  • BRAIN and results management: simple and advanced searches, filter applications, export from bibliographic managers, printing and sending of documents.
  • Promoting user autonomy: developing information skills for the ethical search and use of information.

Requirements

  • No prior knowledge is necessary, as this is an introductory course aimed at the University Community interested in learning about the URJC Library
  • Given the general nature of the course, no prior qualification is required

You will discover how to make the most of the URJC Library independently, learning how to locate books, articles and other academic resources, as well as how to access useful digital tools.

It will help you improve your skills in finding, managing, and using academic information effectively, making it easier for you to study, research, and complete university assignments.

This course is designed to be self-paced. There's no need to start at a specific time, although a learning pace of one topic per week is recommended.

At the end of each module you will be assessed with a test on the basic concepts learned.

This course is part of the training itinerary for students who enroll in the training activity "Search and management of scientific information" with which 1 ECTS credit will be obtained for the subject of Academic Recognition of Credits.
