Description

The Introduction to Open Science course offers an overview of the fundamental principles underpinning this emerging approach to scientific research. Throughout the course, students will explore the historical evolution of Open Science, its benefits for the research community, and the challenges of its implementation. Key topics will be addressed, such as open access to scientific publications, responsible management of research data, the use of collaborative tools, and the promotion of transparency and scientific reproducibility. Furthermore, the technical and cultural barriers that hinder its adoption will be analyzed. This course is part of the Open Science training pathway designed by the Rey Juan Carlos University Library (BURJC), available on URJCx, which also includes the courses: Open Access, BURJC-Digital, Open Data (PGD and e-science Data), and Open Educational Resources (OER).

What you will learn

The "Introduction to Open Science" course is designed to provide students with a basic, introductory understanding of the principles, benefits, and challenges associated with Open Science. The course covers:

  • Concept and evolution of Open Science, from its origins to its current role in research
  • Open access to scientific publications, as a means to democratize knowledge
  • Open Data Management, including its organization, preservation and reuse
  • Collaborative tools that facilitate networking and scientific transparency
  • Benefits of Open Science, such as increased impact and visibility of research
  • Challenges and barriers, both technical and cultural, that its implementation faces

Training itinerary

This course is part of an Open Science training program designed by the URJC library (BURJC), which includes the following courses that will be available on URJCx:

  • Introduction to Open Science
  • Open Access
  • BURJC-Digital
  • Open data (PGD and e-scienceData) and OER

It is recommended to complete all the courses in the itinerary to acquire a complete and practical vision of Open Science and its application in the academic and scientific field.

Requirements

  • No prior knowledge is necessary, as this is an introductory course aimed at people who have an interest in cross-cutting aspects related to Open Science.
  • Given the general nature of the course, no prior qualification is required, although it may be considered especially interesting for research staff at URJC.

Since 2008, he has served as administrator of the BURJC Digital institutional repository, leading its technical and strategic management. Throughout these years, he has actively participated in working groups at both the regional and national levels, contributing to the development and strengthening of policies and best practices in the field of scientific repositories.

Since 2022, he has collaborated closely with the BURJC training group, promoting initiatives aimed at training and supporting the university community in the use and benefit of the institutional repository.
